Office Depot plans to open a second Spokane store this spring at the corner of Wellesley and North Division.
The store would be in a 25,000-square-foot building that has been vacant since Safeway closed there in October 1994. Office Deport plans to expand the building to 30,000 square feet and construction could begin later this month, said Robert Revel, administrator for Hutton Settlement, which owns the building.
Office Depot is in final lease negotiations with Hutton, Revel said.
The store site is on a highly visible, high-traffic corner at N4511 Division, an intersection Office Depot will share with NorthTown Mall.
“It’s a great location and it’s the size property Office Depot was looking for,” said Revel.
Hutton Settlement, a Spokane Valley children’s home, owns the property as part of an endowment fund invested in commerical real estate. Fund proceeds help to staff and maintain the non-profit home.
Office Depot, which has another Spokane store at E1003 Third, is an office supply chain headquartered in Delray Beach, Fla.
The new Spokane store is one of about 80 that the company plans to open in 1995, including another store in Yakima and possibly others in the state.
“Certainly Washington and the entire area has been a good location for us,” said Gary Schweikhart, director of public relations for Office Depot.
“I wouldn’t be surprised to see additional stores opening in the state within the next year,” he said in a telephone interview from Florida.
