Three Moderate Earthquakes Rattle Japan

Three moderate earthquakes struck northern Japan early today, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The quakes had preliminary magnitudes of 5.8, 4.7 and 4.6, according to the Meteorological Agency.

The first quake struck near Etorofu in the Kuril islands, about 700 miles north of Tokyo. The second quake was centered off Kushiro, about 600 miles north of Tokyo. The third quake hit the same spot an hour later.
