The dollar finished little changed against key currencies Wednesday, as traders focused on Mexico’s financial woes and shrugged off a rally in U.S. securities that sent the Dow Jones average to a new high.
Meanwhile, the German mark advanced broadly, briefly hitting a record high vs. the Italian lira, on prospects for an interest rate increase in Germany. Higher rates boost returns on deposits and short-term assets and tend to bring investment flows into a currency.
In late New York trading, the dollar was quoted at 1.5090 marks, up from 1.5087 late Tuesday. The dollar also was changing hands in New York at 98.35 Japanese yen, down from 98.52.
