No longer is Jenny Hoots the Sultan of Sulkin’

“I’ve looked at some of last year’s tapes and I can’t believe how immature I looked,” Hoots said.

The Hoots of old would miss a couple of shots, start to fume then commit a stupid foul.

“She plays now with a lot more confidence and composure,” coach Marty Jessett said of Hoots, who helped third-ranked Cheney to a 19-0 record and its first Frontier League title in 12 years. Cheney is the state’s lone unbeaten Class AA girls team.

Hoots, the tallest player in the league, has averaged 14 points, nine rebounds and six blocked shots for about three quarters of work.

“I think we all came into this season with a whole new attitude,” Hoots said. “A lot came from the coach and a lot came from the players.”

Hoots, a Cheney native, played for Deer Park as a sophomore before returning to her hometown last year. Cheney sputtered all year until it caught fire at district and nearly qualified for state.

“I don’t think we went into this year thinking we could beat everyone,” Hoots said. “We just try to look at each game.”
