Pac-10

Dion Cross scored 18 points and Brevin Knight added 16 and a school-record 12 assists Wednesday night as No. 17 Stanford completed a season sweep of California with an 83-70 victory.

Stanford (7-5 Pac-10, 16-5) broke a season-high two-game losing streak, while the Bears (4-8, 12-9) lost for the fourth time in five games.

The Cardinal outscored the Bears 13-1 early in the second half to take a 49-35 following David Harbour’s layup with 12:40 to play.

Cal went over seven minutes without a field goal at that point and Stanford responded by pumping the lead up to 56-38 after Andy Poppink’s jumper with 10:20 remaining.

The Bears hung tough to the end, with Anwar McQueen drilling four 3-pointers and Monty Buckley hitting one with 1:16 to go to cut the lead to 74-68. But Stanford outscored Cal 9-2 in the final minute, hitting seven of nine free throws.

Buckley, McQueen and Jelani Gardner all had 15 points to lead Cal. Buckley and Tremaine Fowlkes added 11 rebounds each.

California shot better from 3-point range (10 for 24), than it did overall (23 for 65). Stanford was even better from long range, going 6 for 9 and finishing the game hitting 27 of 49 shots.

After Stanford opened the game with a 17-5 run, Cal avoided what looked like might be an early knockout by turning it around in the final 5 minutes of the half.

Trailing 27-15, Cal outscored Stanford 11-5 down the stretch. A fourpoint play by Buckley, who was fouled by Darren Allaway as he made a 3-pointer, pulled the Bears within 29-24 with 1:30 remaining.
