Government Declaring War On Violence

Brooks Boliek The Hollywood Reporter

The federal war on violence in television programming is continuing as the government’s biggest advertisers have agreed to refrain from airing advertisements on excessively violent shows.

Under pressure from Sen. Bob Graham, D-Fla., Amtrak, the Postal Service and even the Defense Department have signed a pledge promising not to purchase advertising on shows that are considered “excessively violent.”

The pledges promise that the agencies will not buy advertising time on programs that “contain violence that is inappropriate or unnecessary in relation to the story depicted, or depict frequent acts of violence with no redeeming social value.”

The pledges define violence as “an act perpetrated on another person or persons with specific intent to cause physical harm, injury and/or death.”
