Eagles Hold Off UI To Grab Fourth Place

College women

The Eastern Washington Eagles gave the Idaho Vandals several chances to win Saturday’s game at Memorial Gym, but in the end Idaho couldn’t convert as the Eagles beat the Vandals 46-45.

Idaho had the ball out of bounds with 55 seconds left and trailing 46-43, but Idaho missed four consecutive shots without giving up possession of the ball.

Finally, Ari Skorpik was fouled with 23 seconds left, and she made both free throws to cut the lead to 46-45. Eastern’s Jennifer Sutter missed the front end of a one-andone with 23 seconds left to set up Idaho’s last chance to win the game. Kelli Johnson’s 15-footer with 2 seconds left bounced off the rim and rolled out of bounds to end the game.

“We had numerous opportunities and didn’t do a very good job of converting,” Vandals coach Julie Holt said.

Eastern (5-5 Big Sky, 9-13) is in sole possession of fourth place. Idaho (3-7, 5-17) is two games behind Eastern and one game behind fifth-place Northern Arizona.

The top four teams advance to the conference tournament in March.

Eastern was led by Lori Napier’s 14 points.

Idaho got 14 from Skorpik, who hit all 10 of her free throws.

Before the start of Whitworth’s women’s basketball season, Pirates head coach Helen Higgs was the only one to vote against having the winner of the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges receive double-elimination status in the postseason tournament.

Whitworth’s regular season-ending 67-49 road win against Lewis & Clark gives the Pirates (10-2, 16-11) the NCIC crown - and double-emination status.

After playing the Pirates tight in the first half, the Pioneers didn’t have enough to keep up.

The Pirates finish the regular season with the same conference record as Willamette. However, a sweep of the Bearcats gives Whitworth the title.

Friday night at the Whitworth Fieldhouse, No. 2 Willamette will play No. 3 Lewis & Clark at 8 p.m. The top-seeded Pirates will face No. 4 Whitman at 6 p.m. Winners play Saturday night. If Whitworth loses Friday or Saturday, it will play Monday night for the postseason championship.

Times have yet to be determined.
