Fire Victims’ Relatives Abuse City Mayor
Relatives of 64 people who died in a nightclub fire vented their anger at a city mayor Saturday, overturning tables, shouting and even hitting the mayor during a meeting over compensation.
The fire Wednesday night at the Weierkang club in Taichung in central Taiwan was the deadliest in the island’s history. Officials said it started when employees used a gas burner carelessly.
At the meeting Saturday, relatives of the victims accused Taichung Mayor Lin Po-jung of failing to take responsibility, Taiwan Television said. It said he promised to publish a list of officials who would be punished.
