Two-Timing In Tacoma Three Win Back-To-Back Titles, While Hughes Wins His First

Chris Derrick Staff Writer

Two-timing seniors were epidemic Saturday, but Troy Hughes decided he’d had enough of repeat performances.

Seniors Dusty Roberts of University, Alex Schulz of Deer Park and Henry Peterson of Riverside became two-time state wrestling champions at Mat Classic VII.

Roberts won the Class AAA title at 148 pounds. He won the 135-pound title as a sophomore.

Schulz, last year’s Class A/B 168- pound champion, moved up to 178 to win this year.

Peterson won his second consecutive A/B 115-pound title.

Hughes, a two-time state runnerup, finally reached the pinnacle as a senior. The Mead 178-pounder was second at the same weight last year, and second at 168 as a sophomore.

The area’s other 1995 state champion also is the first in history from Gonzaga Prep. Sophomore Cory Brannon (AAA 108) won an allGreater Spokane final over sophomore Jon Rugan of Mead.

Reaching the finals, but losing, were: Steve Steigleder, G-Prep, AAA 129; Casey Stookey, East Valley, AA 122; Kazuo Yoshiura, Pullman, AA 141; Brandon LaLonde, Colville, AA 158; Ben Umbach, Deer Park, A/B 129; and Terry Haney, Newport, A/B 148.

Steigleder and Brannon were the first G-Prep wrestlers ever to reach finals.

Heavyweight Severin Walsh of A/B Almira/Coulee-Hartline won his title match, but heavyweight Matt Miethe of AAA Rogers was pinned in the title match.
