300 Britons March Through Castle Grounds

Compiled From Wire Services

Three hundred people marched through the private grounds of Windsor Castle on Sunday, demanding access to a path set aside for the royal family.

Thames Valley police said 20 people were arrested for disturbing the peace. The rally was held to protest a new law, the Criminal Justice Act, which criminalizes trespassing on private property.

The section of path through the castle grounds is part of a 180-mile walking route along the Thames River.

“This is a public right of way. The queen has refused ramblers access to this stretch of pathway citing security reasons,” protested Dixie Dean, spokeswoman for the Coalition Against the Criminal Justice Act.

“We have a right to walk in the countryside whenever we choose without having to suffer arrest and harassment,” she added.
