Landslide Destroys Rail Line, Freeway

Compiled From Wire Services

Road and train traffic between northern and southern Greece was limited Monday after a weekend landslide destroyed a major portion of the country’s main highway and rail line.

No one was hurt.

The landslide occurred 22 miles north of the capital and destroyed about 500 yards of the country’s main rail link and six of the eight lanes that make up the national highway.

Public works ministry officials did not know how long it would take to repair the damage, estimated at more than $40.8 million.

The highway, which skirts the Parnis mountain range, was expanded from four to eight lanes in 1993.

Officials are investigating accusations that the expansion was carried out without a proper geological survey after an underground river was discovered beneath the mountain that collapsed.
