Student Allegedly Tried To Hire Hitman

Compiled From Wire Services

A Florida State University law student was charged Monday with trying to hire a hitman to kill a school employee she said had accused her of cheating.

Joann Plachy, 49, was charged with soliciting murder after authorities said she paid $1,000 to the purported hitman, who was actually cooperating with authorities.

According to conversations recorded by police, Plachy told Peter Laquerre that school employee Margaret Satterfield had accused her of obtaining a copy of an exam before taking the test.

“If I don’t take this person out of the picture, I’m just screwed,” she said, according to an arrest affidavit.

“I’m looking at losing my whole law career, and I’m just about a straight-A student,” she said.

She faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted.
