The United States will send a few military observers to help monitor a border war cease-fire between Ecuador and Peru, the Pentagon said Tuesday.
Discussions are under way on the composition of the unit, which would include representatives from Chile, Brazil, Argentina and the United States, said Pentagon spokesman Ken Bacon.
“The size of the force we are considering … is very small,” Bacon said, estimating it would number 16 to 40 members, with each nation contributing only four to 10 men.A small unit has been sent to the region to evaluate the mission, Bacon added.
Ecuador has logged an official death toll of 12, while Peru acknowledges losing 38 soldiers since fighting began Jan. 26.
