Reba Got More Than A Little Behind In Her Work

Compiled By Staff Writer Rick Bo

Life on the road was not kind to Reba McEntire’s cowgirlish figure.

McEntire, who’s wrestled with a weight problem since college, tells Family Circle magazine she used to indulge in such fatty favorites as chicken-fried steaks and fried-egg sandwiches while on tour.

“I’d wash it all down with malteds,” she adds.

But after doctors discovered that an allergy to dairy products was affecting her voice, McEntire switched to a healthier, low-fat diet, gave up beer and started an exercise program.

Along with her home gym in Nashville, she says: “When I’m onstage, I work out for 90 minutes, five nights a week.”

At 120 today, McEntire says, “My husband, Narvel, would like me five pounds lighter, but I’m at a perfect weight for my bone structure.”

Loose talk

Director Robert Zemeckis, envisioning the Forrest Gump II sequel: “He would be in a white Bronco on a summer day on an LA freeway.”

Certain winters always gave us the blues

Johnny Winter turns 51 today.

He’s not what you’d call an American beauty

A Grateful Dead roadie has been charged with misdemeanor assault for punching a Salt Lake City disc jockey who knocked on his hotel room door looking for guitarist Jerry Garcia. The roadie reportedly responded with an expletive and demanded, “Do I look like Jerry Garcia?” before decking the deejay.

Guess he’s the godfather of geography, too

James Brown, who entertained American troops in Vietnam almost 30 years ago, is returning for two concerts there in April. “We can use this as a stepping stone to a better humanity throughout the world,” Brown said. “I want them to realize they are part of the world.”

Why should the next 20 be any different?

Friends of O.J. Simpson are planning a three-hour, pay-per-view TV special - with a record $75 price tag - if he goes free. As a source told the New York Post: “A lot of big-time operators are putting a lot of big-time money into this venture because they believe in his innocence, and also believe that an acquitted O.J. will become the most talked about human being on the planet for the next 20 years.”

`My Bloody Valentine’ seemed like an odd gift

Donald Trump has joined the Simpson circus, revealing on “Geraldo” that a videotape the Juice gave him as a wedding present when he married Marla Maples was signed “from O.J. and Nicole.”

That’s the real truth of the matter - for free

Let’s leave the last word to veteran sportswriter Frank Deford: “Because we don’t think we have heroes in our society, we turn to something as minimal - wonderful, but minimal - as athletics. It’s our fault for building these young guys, these youngsters into heroes when sports and heroes are two entirely different subjects.”
