Journey Of Faith Journey Of Faith Is Fight To Survive

Religious freedom awaited the thousands of Russian refugees who flocked to Spokane.

Prosperity is more elusive.

Some of the new immigrants are hard at work. But many others are stymied by language and the fast American culture and shy away from the jousting often required to land a job. Some slide into welfare.

It’s easier for the kids. They pick up English more quickly than adults and are more willing to blend American ways with the traditions they brought from their homeland.

“Journey of Faith” is a twopart Spokesman-Review special report on Spokane’s burgeoning Russian community.

Part 1, published last Sunday, explained how Spokane became a magnet for thousands of Russia’s religious refugees.

Part 2, in this Sunday’s Spokesman-Review, looks at the problems and promise of their new lives in America.
