Columbia Basin Edges Ccs 51-48

College women

The Community Colleges of Spokane women’s basketball team squandered a 14-point, second-half lead and lost to Columbia Basin 51-48 in a Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges playoff game Saturday at SCC.

The win gave Columbia Basin (20-5) the No. 1 seed to next week’s NWAACC Tournament at Chemeketa CC in Salem, Ore. The Sasquatch (21-6), who had beaten Columbia Basin 52-49 earlier in the week, will go as the No. 2 seed and will meet Chemeketa (26-1) on Thursday at 6 p.m.

CCS built a 26-18 halftime edge and led 42-28 with 8 minutes remaining in the game before Columbia Basin turned up the defensive pressure.

The press forced several turnovers down the stretch for Spokane, which played without injured point guard Laura Fralich. Fralich injured her knee in Thursday’s victory over Walla Walla CC and won’t play again this season.

Brandy Hurlbert scored 18 points for CCS. Kelly Gaines added 13.

Senior center Lori Napier scored a career-high 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Eagles took a big step toward a postseason playoff berth by defeating the Lumberjacks in Flagstaff, Ariz.

Eastern Washington (6-6 Big Sky, 10-14) eliminated Northern Arizona (5-8, 13-12) and gained a game-and-ahalf lead for the fourth and final berth in the Big Sky Conference Tournament. The tournament is set for March 10-11 in Missoula, the home of Montana, the regular-season champion.

The only team with a chance to catch the Eagles for fourth is Weber State, which is now 5-8 in the conference. However, the Wildcats would have to beat Northern Arizona in Flagstaff this week, and Eastern would have to lose its last two games at home to Montana and Montana State.

Eastern led the entire second half against NAU before the Lumberjacks rallied to knot the game at 59 with 34 seconds to play. Napier’s layup with 8 seconds left proved to be the gamewinner as NAU followed with a costly turnover while working for a potential game-tying or game-winning shot.

Eastern’s Lisa Graber closed out the scoring by making 1 of 2 free throws with 1 second to play.

Napier, a former Medical Lake High School standout, made 12 of 17 shots from the field and added four blocked shots and three assists. Guard Jennifer Sutter added 12 points, making all five of her field-goal attempts.

Snow 77, North Idaho 68

Snow didn’t allow NIC a rebound for the first 7 minutes and held a 15-4 rebounding edge midway through the half while jumping to a 19-11 lead in a Scenic West Athletic Conference game in Coeur d’Alene.

Snow had to withstand a frantic NIC comeback that saw the Cardinals cut a 69-56 deficit to 69-64 with less than a minute to play.

The No. 7-seeded Cardinals (7-11 SWAC, 11-16) will face No. 2 Utah Valley at 1 p.m. PST Wednesday when the Region 18 tournament opens at the College of Southern Idaho. Utah Valley swept NIC this season.

Snow’s Badgers (6-12, 11-16) are seeded eighth and will open against the region’s No. 1 team, Ricks.
