Ice-Cold Kansas Heats Up

Jerod Haase scored 12 of Kansas’ first 14 second-half points and the No. 1 Jayhawks recovered from an ice-cold start to beat No. 14 Missouri 88-69 in men’s college basketball Saturday at Lawrence, Kan., and move within one game of the Big Eight title.

Haase ignited the Jayhawks (10-3 Big Eight, 21-4) with a career-high 26 points. The Jayhawks swept the season series from the Tigers (7-5, 18-6).

(3) North Carolina 80, Florida St. 78

Jeff McInnis’ steal with time running out preserved North Carolina’s win over the Seminoles at Tallahassee, Fla., and moved the Tar Heels (11-3, 21-3) into a three-way tie for first place in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The Seminoles (5-10, 12-13) were in position for the upset despite never leading in the second half.

(4) Connecticut 75, Seton Hall 61

Donny Marshall scored 16 points and Ray Allen added 14 as the Huskies put together two runs in the last 12 minutes en route to a win at Storrs, Conn.

The victory guaranteed the Huskies (15-1 Big East, 22-2) at least a share of the Big East regular-season title with Villanova. The Pirates fell to 7-9, 16-10.

(5) UMass 77, St. Joseph’s 58

Lou Roe was 9 for 10 from the field, scored 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Minutemen at Philadelphia.

Massachusetts improved to 11-3 in the Atlantic 10, 21-4 overall. The Hawks fell to 8-7, 15-10.

(6) Kentucky 71, Vanderbilt 60

Tony Delk scored 22 points and the Wildcats used a 13-1 run within the final 4 minutes to pull away from the Commodores at Nashville, Tenn.

The Wildcats (12-2 SEC, 20-4) secured their fifth straight victory in the series. Vanderbilt (6-8, 12-12) led by as much as 10 in the first half.

(7) Maryland 84, Clemson 68

If this was Joe Smith’s final home game for the Terrapins, he certainly gave the fans at sold-out Cole Field House in College Park, Md., something by which to remember him.

Smith matched his career high with 33 points as the Terrapins (11-3 ACC, 22-5) finished unbeaten at home for the first time in 15 years by defeating Clemson (3-11, 13-11).

Smith, an All-American sophomore center, is considering entering the 1995 NBA draft.

(8) Arkansas 122, Montevallo 64

Alex Dillard and Davor Rimac hit five 3-pointers in 4 minutes as the Razorbacks’ second unit overwhelmed the NAIA Falcons at Fayetteville, Ark.

Arkansas (23-5) led the Falcons (9-18) 62-33 at the half. At that point, eight players had four to nine points and the Razorbacks’ top two scorers - Corliss Williamson and Scotty Thurman - weren’t among them.

(9) Villanova 74, St. John’s 70

Eric Eberz scored 23 points, including all 13 of the Wildcats’ points in a 10-minute span of the second half at Philadelphia.

Villanova (13-3 Big East, 21-6) didn’t lock up its 13th win in 14 games until freshman Felipe Lopez was called for carrying the ball with 3 seconds to play and St. John’s (5-11, 12-12) down 72-70. Alvin Williams then made a layup at the buzzer.

(12) Mich. St. 83, Northwestern 60

Shawn Respert scored 20 points and Quinton Brooks led a secondhalf surge as the Spartans got past the Wildcats at Evanston, Ill.

The loss was the seventh straight for Northwestern (1-14 Big Ten, 5-19). The Spartans improved to 12-3, 20-4.

(16) Miss. St. 46, Ole Miss 42

Darryl Wilson hit a 3-pointer with 35 seconds left as the Bulldogs struggled past the Rebels in Oxford, Miss.

Wilson’s shot from the top of the key gave Mississippi State (11-3 SEC, 19-5) only its second lead of the game.

After Wilson’s 3-pointer, Ole Miss (3-11, 8-16) got off one more shot. But John Jackson’s 3-point try bounced off, and State center Erick Dampier grabbed the rebound.

(20) Alabama 69, Florida 66

Eric Washington’s 3-pointer capped an 8-2 Alabama run during the final 2 minutes and the Crimson Tide edged the Gators in Gainesville, Fla.

Florida (7-7 SEC, 14-10) was led by junior center Dametri Hill’s 21 points. Alabama (9-5, 19-7) also got 21 points from center Antonio McDyess.

Ohio St. 73, (22) Minnesota 65

Rick Yudt scored 18 points, including six during an 8-0 second-half spurt, as the Buckeyes beat the Gophers in Columbus, Ohio.

Minnesota (8-6 Big Ten, 17-9) lost for the second time in four days on the road.

The Buckeyes (2-13, 6-19) avoided tying the school record for losses in a season, set by the 6-20 team in 1975-76.

(24) Ga. Tech 72, N. Carolina St. 68

C.J. Williams scored all eight of his points in the final 2 minutes, 20 seconds as the Yellow Jackets had a 14-2 spurt to defeat the Wolfpack (4-10, 12-12) at Raleigh, N.C.

Williams hit consecutive 3-pointers to put the Yellow Jackets (7-7, 17-10) ahead 68-66, and then finished the scoring with a layup with 2.3 seconds remaining.

(25) Okla. 82, (18) Okla. St. 74 (OT)

Ryan Minor scored 32 points, including a key 3-pointer in overtime, to lead the Sooners to the win over the rival Cowboys at Norman, Okla.

A record crowd of 12,671 watched as the Sooners (8-4 Big Eight, 21-6) completed their first 15-0 season at home since 1989-90. They ended the run with an improbable sweep, over then-No. 9 Missouri, No. 1 Kansas and Oklahoma State.

The Cowboys (9-3, 19-8) were just 10 of 21 from the free-throw line.
