At Ithaca, N.Y., Princeton men’s basketball coach Pete Carril posted career victory No. 500 Friday night when the Tigers beat Cornell.

Carril, 64, has compiled a 500-265 record in 29 seasons of coaching, all but one of them at Princeton. He is the 16th active coach and 40th overall to join the 500-win club.

At Whistler, British Columbia, Italian downhiller Kristian Ghedina has come a long way since an auto accident left him in a coma for two days in 1991.

Ghedina captured his second World Cup downhill of the winter on Saturday when he beat Norwegian Lasse Kjus by 11 one-hundredths of a second on Whistler Mountain.

The United States placed three in the top 11, with 1994 Olympic champion Tommy Moe of Girdwood, Alaska, leading the group in ninth at 2 minutes, 11.96 seconds.
