Spokane Man Shot In Abdomen In Parking Lot

From Staff And Wire Reports

A 21-year-old Spokane man was in serious condition after being shot in the abdomen in a grocery store parking lot early Saturday, detectives said.

Joel F. Mansfield, S2708 McDonald, was recovering after surgery at Valley Hospital and Medical Center.

Spokane County Sheriff’s detectives arrested Jonathan D. Munk, 17, E383 Seventh, after the 12:45 a.m. shooting, according to a statement issued by sheriff’s officials.

Munk was jailed on a charge of first-degree assault.

The shooting happened outside the Tidyman’s grocery store at Sprague and McDonald. Mansfield had just bought some beer and was leaving the store with friends when he was approached by Munk, said sheriff’s Lt. Doug Silver.

Munk asked Mansfield for a beer. When he refused, a fight began, Silver said. One shot was fired in the air, then Mansfield was shot in the stomach.
