Compiled From Wire Services

Director Jack Clayton, who began an era of social realism in British film with the 1958 movie “Room at the Top” and directed Robert Redford in “The Great Gatsby,” has died at age 73.

Clayton, who died Saturday, suffered from heart and liver problems.

“The Innocents,” which Clayton directed in 1961, was a surreal retelling of Henry James’s ghost story “The Turn of the Screw,” starring Deborah Kerr.

Clayton also directed “The Pumpkin Eater,” starring Anne Bancroft, Peter Finch and James Mason, in 1964.
