Game Wardens Kill 5 More Bison Near Yellowstone

From Staff And Wire Reports

Montana wardens and National Park Service rangers killed five more bison Friday on Church Universal and Triumphant property just north of the Yellowstone National Park border, bringing this week’s total to 12.

Meanwhile, federal rangers on horseback tried to push a building herd of bison back toward the park’s interior. As many as 100 bison had moved to the edge of Gardiner Friday, officials said.

When the bison cross the boundary into Montana, state wardens are empowered to shoot them, especially if they wander onto private property. Federal wardens assist when asked.

The bison are killed because many of them are infected with brucellosis, a contagious disease that causes domestic livestock to abort. Montana livestock currently are certified brucellosis free.
