They Said It

“This will have a good impact on tourism because now tourists won’t have to climb mountains to visit the temples, and the scenery will be much more beautiful.”

-Tang Zhangjin, manager of China’s Three Gorges dam project, saying the area will benefit when mountains become islands in the dam’s reservoir.

“God is cool.”

-The “SOS” stamped in the snow by David Huttenlocker, 18, who survived two frigid nights after skiing out of bounds and getting lost at White Pass Ski Area. The message caught the eye of helicopter rescuers.

“I figured out I’m not very good at sports with no subs.”

-Sports writer Dan Weaver after his exhausting unsuccessful attempt at climbing Mount Rainier.

“Hell, we’re going to need a five-day waiting period on chain saws.”

-Sportsmen’s advocate and former state Rep. George Orr, talking about the Republican election landslide. Orr was opposed in the November elections by the NRA.

“My environmental record is not that great.”

-Rep. Ralph Regula, R-Ohio, explaining why Western lawmakers shouldn’t oppose him as chair of the Interior Appropriations subcommittee.
