Convening Of Congress Will Put Promises To Test

Congress’ newly elected leaders, who have been talking non-stop since Nov. 8, will begin putting their words into action when Congress convenes Wednesday.

Expect some frosty relations as both parties adjust to their new roles with Republicans in control and Democrats as the minority.

Much is at stake. Orphanages and middle-class tax cuts have grabbed the headlines, but GOP efforts to streamline government regulation will be far more important to business.

National Association of Purchasing Management in New York issues its monthly report on the manufacturing sector.

The 1995 Mid-Columbia Farm Forum and Ag Show opens for two days at the Pasco Red Lion. Clyde Ballard, incoming Washington state speaker of the house, speaks at noon Tuesday; Ron Prince, chairman of California’s Save Our State Initiative 187 Committee, speaks at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Wednesday

Bankruptcy court hearing scheduled in Santa Ana, Calif., to determine whether Orange County can make interest payments on certain bonded indebtedness.

STEEP (Solutions to Environmental and Economic Problems) II annual meeting opens at the Tower Inn Best Western in Richland, running through Thursday. STEEP II is a tri-state research effort to develop technology for conservation farming in the Northwest. General Motors, Chrysler and some foreign automakers report their year-end sales figures.

The Department of Commerce reports construction spending for November.

Thursday

Johnny Humphreys, president and chief executive officer of Itron Corp., speaks at the Gonzaga University Dean’s Business Forum. Continental breakfast begins at 7:15 a.m. in the Jepson Center auditorium.

Edward D. Jones & Co. hosts a live satellite broadcast for investors at 2 p.m. at the Jones’ office, 2020 Lakewood Drive in Coeur d’Alene. Consumer Electronics Show opens in Las Vegas.

American Farm Bureau Federation, the nation’s largest farm organization, opens its annual meeting in St. Louis.
