Obituaries

Mildred (Long) Estes Palouse, Wash.

Service for Mildred F. (Long) Estes was Thursday at the Palouse Federated Church and was followed by burial at Greenwood Cemetery in Palouse.

Kramer Funeral Home in Palouse was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Estes, 87, died Dec. 25. Born on the family ranch in Whitman County, she attended the Kamiak Butte Country School near Palouse. She moved with her family in 1923 to Waverly, Wash., where she graduated from Fairfield High School.

She moved to Colfax, Wash., after graduation to keep house for two of her brothers and care for her mother. She also worked for several years at Pullman Memorial Hospital.

She married Ole A. Estes in 1940 and they made their home in Vernonia, Ore. They returned to Palouse in 1944.

In 1958 she began working in the hotel at the Compton Union Building at Washington State University, retiring in 1972.

She cared for children with special needs while they attended a special program at Edison School.

The Estes lived in Pullman from 1960 to 1968 and then returned to Palouse.

She was a member of the Palouse Christian Church, the Palouse Federated Church, and the Palouse Grange. She was also a member of the Easter Rebekah Lodge No. 97, the Palouse Help One Another Club, and the Palouse Senior Citizens Club.

Survivors include her husband, at the home; two sons, Loren Estes of Palouse and Dean Estes of Boise; two sisters, Alice John of Lewiston and Elsie Casey of Spokane; six grandchildren and one greatgrandchild.

Memorials may be made to the Palouse Emergency Medical Technicians or to the Palouse Federated Church.

Jerry Manley Sr. St. Maries

No service is planned for Jerry R. Manley Sr. at his request.

Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Manley, 76, died Thursday. He was born in Montrose, Colo., and was raised in Los Angeles where he graduated from high school in 1936.

He worked for Evans Tank Lines and in 1942 enlisted in the Army. He served in the European theater of the war and was discharged in 1944.

Mr. Manley lived in Los Angeles and Denver where he was a truck driver. In the 1970s he moved to Littletown, Colo., and worked for Ringsby Trucking.

He married Bonnie Overstreet in 1974 and they moved to Fernwood, Idaho, in 1975. He worked in the road maintenance department for the state highway department, retiring in 1981.

Mr. Manley was a member of the Fernwood Senior Citizens, American Legion Post No. 85 and the Good Sams. He was also a member of the American Association of Retired Persons, the St. Maries Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Retired Military Officers Association.

Survivors include his wife, at the home; four sons, Jerry Manley Jr. of Fernwood, Bruce Manley of Grass Valley, Calif., David Overstreet of Tracy, Calif., and Paul Overstreet of Ceres, Calif.; a daughter, Jerri Savala of Tracy, Calif.; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Theresa Hudson Spokane

Service for Theresa M. Hudson will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home South followed burial at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Hudson, 63, died Wednesday. Born in Agassig, British Columbia, she moved to Spokane in 1955.

She was a homemaker and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Cheam Band of Indians in Canada.

Survivors include her husband of 44 years, Dewey Hudson Sr., at the home; 15 children, Dewey Hudson Jr., Dale Hudson, William Hudson, Van Hudson, Julian Hudson, Rose Allen, Theresa Hudson, Hope Hudson, Fidel Hudson, Floyd Hudson, Hugh Hudson, all of Spokane, Ritchie Hudson of Seattle, Diane Hudson of Detroit, Mich., Anna Hudson of Los Angeles, and Paula Maxie of Virginia; a brother, Raymond Shaw; four sisters, Eliza Shaw, Elsie Hope, Elizabeth Phillips and Christine Varga; and numerous nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.

Agnes (McDonald) McKenna Spokane

Vigil service for Agnes S. (McDonald) McKenna, a lifetime Spokane resident, is planned for 7 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church followed by burial at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mrs. McKenna, 78, died Thursday.

She graduated from Rogers High School and then worked at SeaFirst Bank as a switchboard operator, retiring in the mid 1970’s. She also worked for Pacific Northwest Telephone Co. as an operator for several years.

Mrs. McKenna was a member of St. Francis Xavier Parish and St. Margaret’s Guild at St. Francis Xavier Parish. She was also a volunteer at the Sacred Heart Medical Center gift shop.

Her first husband, Matt McDonald, died in 1969.

Survivors include her husband, Leo McKenna, at the home; a son, Patrick F. McDonald of St. Louis, Mo.; a stepson, Patrick McKenna of Benton City, Wash.; two stepdaughters, Nanci Harder of Ritzville, Wash., and Michele Hernandez of Spokane; 15 grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Poor Clare Nuns, N4419 Hawthorne, Spokane, 99205.

Helen Hupp Spokane

Graveside service for Helen G. Hupp was Friday at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Ball and Dodd Funeral Home South was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hupp, 97, died Tuesday. Born in Franklin County, Ohio, she graduated from high school in Jefferson County in 1915.

She graduated from college in Ohio in 1919 with a degree in business and also graduated from college in Calgary, Alberta, in 1922 with a degree in art. She taught herself how to play four musical instruments.

Mrs. Hupp moved to the Spokane area in 1929 and was a manager at the Ardis Apartments during World War II for some military service people.

She was a manager at the Merlin Apartments and was also a hotel/motel manager, retiring in 1980.

Mrs. Hupp was a member of the Northwest Showman’s Association in Puyallup, Wash., and was one of the first policewomen to walk a beat during World War II in Spokane.

She married Charles Hupp in 1934. He died in 1960.

Survivors include two daughters, JoAnne Patrick of Spokane and Pauline Chastain of Lebanon, Ore.; a son, Ernest Susanj of Grand Coulee; nine grandchildren, 22 greatgrandchildren and eight great-greatgrandchildren.

Josie Davis Veradale

A private family burial for Josie A. Davis will be held in Santa Cruz, Calif.

Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Davis, 85, died Thursday. Born in Missouri, she spent most of her life on the West Coast with the last 16 years in the Spokane area.

She was a member of the Starshooters Square Dance Club and was a past Noble Grand and also held several other offices at the Ramona Rebecca Lodge in Millwood.

Survivors include her husband of 24 years, John W. Davis, at the home; a daughter, Boby Scott of Greenacres; a son, Vernon Atwood of Prineville, Ore.; four grandchildren, seven greatgrandchildren and seven great-greatgrandchildren.

Vada McKinley Spokane

At her request, no service will be held for Vada H. McKinley, 91. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of cremation.

Mrs. McKinley, who died Dec. 24, was born in Dusty, Wash.

She graduated from Moscow High School and the University of Idaho and taught for several years in Gooding, Idaho. She returned to the U of I as a botany instructor. During World War II she worked in the shipyards in Vancouver, Wash. She worked at the university until she married Emmett McKinley in 1948 and then they moved to the Lewiston Orchards area of Lewiston. Her husband died in 1989.

She was a member of the Federated Garden Club of Idaho.

She is survived by three sisters, Gladys Chapman of Coeur d’Alene, Ida Weyermann of Beaverton, Ore., and Vera Rojan of Spokane.

Frank Hammerstrom Staunton, Va.

Memorial service for Frank R. Hammerstrom, M.D., 70, was held Wednesday in Virginia.

Dr. Hammerstrom, a former Metaline Falls, Wash., and Spokane resident, died Dec. 25 in Virginia, where he had lived for the past six months. He was born in Helena.

He served in the Navy during World War II. He was a surgeon and had a private practice in Metaline Falls from 1949 until 1979, when he moved to Spokane. He held a private practice in Spokane and had worked at Eastern State Hospital for 13 years. He and his wife, Jewel Hammerstrom, had recently moved to Virginia.

He is survived by his wife; four sons, Robert Hammerstrom of Seattle, James Hammerstrom and Paul Bockman, both of Spokane, and David Bockman of Ephrata, Wash.; seven daughters, Jane Hammerstrom of Shelton, Wash., Patricia Arambula of El Paso, Texas, Lille Hammerstrom of Houston, Texas, Halle Bechtold of Adelphi, Md., Samme Newman of Columbus, Miss., Glenna Jones of Swoope, Va., and Tracee Bougger of Columbus, Neb.; two sisters, Elaine Livers of Bellevue, Wash., and Helen Cosner of Billings, Mont.; and 21 grandchildren.

Dr. Robert Closson Colfax, Wash.

Service for Dr. Robert A. Closson was Tuesday at Colfax First Baptist Church. Burial was at Colfax Cemetery.

Dr. Closson, 39, died Dec. 22 from a heart attack. He was born in Colfax.

He was a member of the Colfax Elks Lodge and Phi Beta Kappa Honors Fraternity. His professional memberships included Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and an associate of American College of Physicians.

He was involved with Southeast Washington Home Health and Hospice.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Closson, a daughter, Alicia and a son, Elef, all at the home; his parents, Bill and Evelyn Closson of Colfax; two sisters, Pam Becker of Colfax and Julie Dashiell of Hunters, Wash.; and his grandmother, Marion Filan of Colfax.

Memorial contributions may be made to Whitman Hospital Foundation, Colfax Emergency Medical Technicians or the Washington State University Honor Society.

Eugene ‘E.J.’ Titus Jr. Scott’s Valley, Wash.

Memorial service for Eugene J. “E.J.” Titus Jr., will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Westgate Christian Church. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Titus, 38, died Dec. 24 in Hoquiam, Wash., from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

He was born in Trenton, N.J., and moved to Smith Valley, Nev., with his family in 1970 and graduated from Smith Valley High School. He attended the University of Nevada in Reno and moved to Spokane in 1979. He graduated from Spokane Community College.

Mr. Titus was a landscape architect and worked for many area businesses as well as being a personal gardener for many homes in Spokane. During the winter he worked for REGIS Co.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy Titus; his mother and stepfather, Margaret and Frank Parsons of Smith Valley; his father, Eugene Titus of Pennsylvania; and three sisters, Laura Miller of Browns Mills, N.J., Wendy Soberg of Spokane and Robin Titus of Smith Valley.

James Penick Palo Alto, Calif.

Private burial for James Lal Penick, 88, is planned in Los Altos, Calif. Cusimano Family Colonial Mortuary of Mountain View, Calif., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Penick, a former Spokane resident, died Dec. 25.

He was born in Three Notch, Ala.

He was a retired lieutenant commander with the Navy. He served for 30 years and retired in 1956.

Mr. Penick lived in Spokane from 1980 through 1993, when he moved to Palo Alto.

He was a member of the Retired Officers Association.

His first wife, Annie Penick, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred Penick; five sons, James, Patrick, Jack, Jerry and Mike Penick; 14 grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren.

Frank Mordhorst Moses Lake

Service for Frank Fred Mordhorst is planned for 11 a.m. Thursday at the Wilson Creek Presbyterian Church followed by burial at the Wilson Creek Cemetery.

Nicoles Funeral Home in Ephrata, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Mordhorst, 90, died Wednesday. Born in Great Falls, Mont., he moved with his family to Wilson Creek, Wash., in 1906.

He helped farm with the family until 1924 when he took a job in Bend, Ore., working in a sawmill. When the Depression started, he returned to Wilson Creek and stayed with his brother.

In 1932 he began working on a farm owned by Mrs. J.P. Johnson. He later purchased the farm.

He moved to Terrace Heights Nursing Home in Moses Lake three years ago due to deteriorated health.

Mr. Mordhorst was a member of the Wilson Creek United Presbyterian Church and the Wilson Creek Grange.

Survivors include numerous nephews and nieces.

Memorials may be made to the Wilson Creek Presbyterian Church, the Wilson Creek Cemetery or the Grant County Museum in Ephrata.

Oscar White Spokane

Service for Oscar White, 81, was held Wednesday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial was at Peone Prairie Cemetery.

Mr. White, a longtime Mead resident, died Dec. 26. He was born in Tahlequah, Okla.

He had worked as a brick mason with Kaiser Aluminum for 29 years.

Mr. White was a member of Mead United Methodist Church and the Steelworkers Local No. 329.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Hazel White; three sons, Bob White of Mead, Edward Pearson of Soldotna, Alaska, and Daryle White of Kenai, Alaska; one daughter, Jean Hueth of Fredricksburg, Va.; 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Dennis ‘Matt’ Matteson Spokane

A private family service was held for Dennis H. “Matt” Matteson.

Riplinger Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Matteson, 63, died Dec. 25. Born in Garber, Okla., he served in the Navy.

He moved to Spokane 20 years ago and worked as a boilermaker at the local union hall for 20 years.

Mr. Matteson was a member of the Boilermakers Union and Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda Hermes of Vancouver, Wash.; a son, Dennis Matteson Jr. of Troutdale, Ore.; and one grandson.

Caroll Hutchinson St. Maries

No service is planned for Caroll M. Hutchinson at her request. YatesHodge Funeral Home in St. Maries is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hutchinson, 74, died Dec. 25.

She was born and raised in Poland and moved to the United States when she was 18. She graduated from Mount Holyoke College in Boston.

She married Murl Hutchinson in 1945 and they made their home in Osburn, Idaho. He died in 1985.

Mrs. Hutchinson moved to St. Maries six months ago.

Survivors include two sons, Peter Hutchinson of St. Maries and Tom Hutchinson of Craigmont, Idaho; four grandchildren and one greatgrandchild.

Nelo Marcon Deer Park

Graveside service for Nelo Marcon was Thursday at Wildrose Cemetery. Lauer Funeral Home of Deer Park was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Marcon, 81, died Dec. 26.

Born in Elk River, Idaho, he moved to Deer Park many years ago.

He retired from Deer Park Pine after 30 years of service.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Mary Marcon, at the home; two daughters, Dixie Goodman of Spokane and Valina Faye of Deer Park; and two sisters, Olga Orsi of Spokane and Ida Inman of Mead.

Madeline Trunk Spokane

Funeral Mass for Madeline R. Trunk, 95, was Thursday at St. Aloysius Catholic Church. Burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Trunk, an 80-year Spokane resident, died Dec. 26. She was born in Edwall, Wash., and graduated from North Central High School. She was a homemaker.

Her husband, Carl Trunk, preceded her in death. She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
