U.S. Team Tabs Blair

Five-time Olympic gold medalist Bonnie Blair and Christine Witty were named to the U.S. Sprint Speedskating Team.

Blair, in her final season of competition after winning two more gold medals in the 1994 Olympics, won all four races in the two-day National Long Track Sprint Championships at the Pettit National Ice Center. In Milwaukee on Sunday, she captured the 500-meter race in 40.13 seconds and the 1,000 in 1:20.01.

Witty, a 19-year-old from West Allis, Wis., who made the 1994 Olympic team, chased Blair all weekend, finishing second in three of four races. She finished third Sunday in the 500 with a time of 41.10 and second in the 1,000 at 1:21.79.

Janne Ahonen of Finland won the second event in the Four Hills ski-jumping World Cup competition, beating Austria’s Andreas Goldberger in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.
