Dozens Killed When Bus Plunges Off Bridge

Compiled From Wire Services

A passenger bus plunged off a bridge today after racing another bus, killing at least 31 people and injuring 41 others, police said.

Chief Inspector Jesus de la Cruz said the accident took place early this morning near Echague town in Isabela province, about 150 miles north of Manila.

De la Cruz and a witness said the bus operated by the Florida Bus Line was racing with another bus when it careened off the road and bridge, dropping into a 25-foot ravine.

Many of the dead and the injured were pinned down by the bus. A crane was used to lift the bus so victims could be removed.
