Matches Will Test Cv’s Claim To Gsl Wrestling Throne

Mike Vlahovich Staff Writer

If Central Valley’s wrestlers would be kings, this week is telling.

Tonight the Bears travel to Rogers and on Friday host Mead in matches that will determine the legitimacy of their Greater Spokane League title challenge.

Only 3-0 University and the 2-0 Bears are unbeaten heading into this week’s competition.

The Titans already have beaten both Rogers and Mead. CV must win at least once this week if its season ending match with U-Hi is to determine the champion.

During the holidays, University was Spokane’s highest scoring finisher at the Tri-State Wrestling Tournament in Couer d’Alene, a meet featuring 43 schools.

Three Valley wrestlers won championships including Titan Dusty Roberts, who earned an unprecedented third straight title.

In addition, teammate Scott Garcia head-and-armed his way to a pin at 140 pounds and CV’s Rick Giampietri was the 152-pound titleist with a 6-5 victory.

Also placing were Titan J.D. Peterson, fourth at 135 and Bear Bob Perkes who was fourth at heavyweight.

West Valley’s Quinn Sharpe and Aaron Lehinger and East Valley’s Joel Adamson each took sixth.

The latter two schools begin Frontier League competition with matches on Thursday.

Gracious hosts of holiday fare

Both West Valley and Freeman’s basketball teams proved to be gracious hosts of their respective holiday basketball tournaments - if unwillingly so.

The Eagles, who have won 7 of 9 games, were nudged 68-66 in the first round of their Holiday Classic by Post Falls, in part because the team was playing without injured Sabron Stone.

Freeman lost to defending State B champion Northwest Christian in the first round of its tournament.

Both won on the second night, but it was the first time that WV had not won its own tournament.

Once-beaten Post Falls, the tournament champion, is coached by West Valley graduate Scott Moore. The Eagles beat Riverside, which comes into the Frontier League next year, in consolation play.

Tournament runner-up Bonners Ferry was paced by former East Valley player Gavin Glindeman who, incidentally, was a teammate of Riverside’s Kevin Kuntz during summer AAU play.

David Schillinger averaged 19 points per game, Greg Jones 17.5 and Brian Lindley 15.5 for WV during the event.

The Eagles open Frontier League competition this week, including Saturday at home against one of the favorites, Pullman.

A pair of teams will be seeking their initial victories when East Valley goes to Cheney on Friday.

Most consistent scorer during EV’s seven losses has been Cory Huston who is averaging just under 12.0 per game.

‘Future Knights’ program begins

East Valley’s Future Knights Winter Youth Program is under way this week for boys and girls in grades 3-8.

Boys coach Richard King said that walk-ons are welcome for the fiveweek program.

Fundamentals are being taught Tuesday and Wednesday by the staffs and players from both high school varsity teams. Games will be played on Saturday.

Third and fourth graders will play at an 8 foot basket and use a smaller basketball.

Cost of the program is $45. For information call King at East Valley, 927-3200 Ext. 122 or at 926-0881.
