Working families who don’t have health insurance and can’t afford eye care can apply now for free eye exams that will be given in March.

Exams will be provided by volunteer doctors through the American Optometric Association’s fifth annual VISION USA program.

Applications are due Jan. 31. Only people who have not had an eye exam in the past two years are eligible.

Independent living: Comments on how to help people with disabilities live on their own will be taken at a community meeting Monday at 3 p.m. in Room 201 of the state Division of Vocational Rehabilitation regional office, E901 Second.

The State Independent Living Council is seeking ideas about what programs and services are needed to encourage independent living, and what obstacles are in the way.

Sign language interpreters, materials in Braille or large type and other aids are available to participants on request. For further information, call the council toll-free at 1-800-624-4105 (voice and TDD).

Coping with schizophrenia: “Understanding and Managing the Symptoms of Schizophrenia” is the subject of a workshop Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church sanctuary, S318 Cedar.

Colorectal cancer: Dr. Michael Moore, a general surgeon, and Dr. Joni Nichols, an oncologist, will discuss new information about risk factors for colorectal cancer and treatment options Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Rockwood Clinic, E400 Fifth.

Fighting violence: Dorothy Mann, director of Seattle’s Anti-Violence Project, will explain how communities can respond to violence as a public health issue in “Seeds of Violence, Part II,” a free public forum next Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Sacred Heart Medical Center’s Providence Auditorium.
