Courier Reaches Semis

Jim Courier and defending champion Yevgeny Kafelnikov advanced to the quarterfinals of the Australian Hardcourt championships in Adelaide, Australia.

Courier, third seeded, breezed by Daniel Vacek of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-4 and Kafelnikov, the 20-year-old No. 1 seed from Russia, scored a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Henrik Holm of Sweden.

Jan Siemerink ousted eighth-seeded Guy Forget from the Qatar Open with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) victory in Doha, Qatar.

Siemerink earned a quarterfinal berth against second-seeded Michael Stich, who defeated Olivier Gross 6-4, 7-5.

Guenter Parche, who received probation for stabbing Monica Seles in the back during a match on April 30, 1993, will be retried in Hamburg, Germany.
