Kate Starbird scored a career-high 27 points and rescued No. 5 Stanford from slow starts in each half, leading the Cardinal past No. 14 Washington 68-54 in college women’s basketball Thursday night at Stanford, Calif.

Stanford (10-1) trailed 8-0 and 12-4 in the Pacific-10 Conference opener before rallying behind Starbird to a 33-27 halftime lead. The Cardinal then missed five of their first six shots in the second half and trailed 42-40 after UW’s Katia Foucade hit a 3 with 13:59 remaining.

But the Huskies (10-4) didn’t score for the next 6-1/2 minutes and Stanford went ahead to stay.

Starbird sank two free throws to tie the score and reserve Heather Owen of Moscow, Idaho, made two more, putting Stanford ahead 44-42. Then Starbird went back to work. She stole a cross-court pass and went in for a layup, then sank two free throws for a 48-42 lead with 7:35 remaining. They were Owen’s only points of the game.

Foucade’s jump shot ended Washington’s drought and pulled the Huskies to 48-44 with 7:25 left. But Anita Kaplan hit a jump hook from the left of the lane to start a 15-4 Stanford run that stretched the lead to 63-48 with 2:19 to play, putting the game out of reach.

At Berkeley, Calif., the Bears (6-4) held off the Cougars’ furious challenge in the closing 7 minutes to post the win.

WSU (7-3) trailed by 20 points with 7:29 to play, then scored 16 straight points, including seven by Amy Saneholtz. The Cougars trailed by four points, 81-77, with 1:30 to play, but could get no closer as Kelley Tatum dropped home two free throws to stop WSU’s run.

“We were sloppy the first 34 minutes and we didn’t have the defensive intensity we are accustomed to playing with,” Cougars coach Harold Rhodes said. “We allowed Cal to establish a big lead and dug a whole that was too deep to come out of.”
