Tony Bennett Croons Over Grammy Nomination

Tony Bennett, the 68-year-old darling of the MTV generation, received a Grammy nomination Thursday for his “MTV Unplugged” album.

The jaunty king of cross-generational crooning, whose first Grammy nomination (for “I Left My Heart in San Francisco”) came two decades before the music cable channel even began, was among the five acts nominated for 1994’s best album, a category usually dominated by rockers.

Newcomer Sheryl Crow tied for the most Grammy nominations with five, including best new artist. Elton John, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Springsteen and Babyface got five nominations apiece.

Winners in 87 categories will be announced in a CBS broadcast from Los Angeles on March 1. Winners will be chosen by the 7,000 voting members of Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences.
