Stanford At WSU

The Cougars (1-0 in the Pacific-10 Conference, 5-3 overall) go for a home sweep of the Bay Area schools when they face the 23rd-ranked Cardinal (1-0, 10-0) at 3 p.m. at Friel Court.

At a glance

WSU, after knocking off 17th-ranked California Thursday night, gets another chance for an upset against surprising Stanford. The Cardinal was expected to be improved over last season, but not even coach Mike Montgomery expected a 10-0 start, which includes wins over 23rdranked Virginia on the road and 19th-ranked Wisconsin at home. The Cardinal won’t come in with as many great athletes and physical specimens as Cal, but Montgomery consistently gets his team to play closer to its potential than any coach in the league. The Cardinal, like WSU, is short on depth. Point guard Donminic Ellison gave the Cougars a career game - 26 points, six assists and only three turnovers - against Cal. Sophomore forward Tavares Mack missed the Cal game because of illness and is doubtful today. If he can’t go, either true freshman Carlos Daniel, who scored 13 points Thursday, or senior Rob Corkrum, who had four blocks, will start.

Stanford: Dion Cross, 17.5 points per game; Brevin Knight, 17. 1 ppg, 6.3 assists per game; Tim Young, 10.7 ppg, 9.1 rebounds per game.

WSU: Isaac Fontaine, 18.9 ppg; Mark Hendrickson, 12.4 ppg, 11.0 rpg; Donminic Ellison, 12.4 ppg and 6.4 apg.
