Pac-10

UCLA, the No. 2 team in the country for a couple more days, flirted with starting 0-2 in the Pac-10.

Tyus Edney, Ed O’Bannon and the new guy in the Bruins’ starting lineup, J.R. Henderson, made sure that didn’t happen.

Edney scored 23 points and triggered a late surge as UCLA (1-1 Pac10, 7-1 overall) bounced back from Thursday night’s loss at Oregon to beat Oregon State 87-78 Saturday at Corvallis, Ore.

Mustapha Hoff scored a careerhigh 31 points for the Beavers (1-1, 4-7), who led 41-35 at halftime and stretched the lead to eight early in the second half.

Edney also had five assists and just three turnovers, four fewer than he had 40 miles down the road in the 82-72 setback at Eugene.

“We were coming off a loss and I didn’t play well,” Edney said. “I wanted to come out and do whatever I could to win this game.”

Edney had a crucial assist and six straight free throws as the Bruins outscored the Beavers 12-3 in the final 2 minutes.

“He takes control,” Oregon State coach Jim Anderson said. “He definitely knew what they needed to do and he got the ball to the key people.”

Ed O’Bannon scored 18 and Henderson a career-high 16 as all five UCLA starters scored in double figures. Harrick inserted Henderson into the lineup at guard in place of Cameron Dollar, and the 6-foot-9 freshman responded by hitting 6 of 9 shots, grabbing six rebounds and doing a solid defensive job on Oregon State’s Brent Barry.

“I certainly like J.R.’s game,” Harrick said. “Rebounding, defensively and even offensively, I thought he was very strong today.”
