Bottom Lines Staff Writer Jim Kershner’s Look At The News

Reality check No. 1

What’s all the uproar over that comment by Newt’s mom? Hasn’t every Republican in Washington used that word about Hillary?

And yet another shocker from that interview

Mrs. Gingrich called her own son a word even more alarming. She called him “Newty.”

Moral: Never tell your secrets to Connie Chung

That Connie Chung is a piece of work, isn’t she? She promised that their conversation would be “just between you and me,” give or take 100 million people.

Reality check No. 2

Why, exactly, is everyone so concerned about the impact of the proposed Science Center on the Riverfront Park Pavilion? I mean, have you seen the Riverfront Park Pavilion? Most pizza parlors have better rides.

We’ve got our priorities straight

Yeah, that would be a proud achievement for Spokane. Scuttle a science museum so that putt-putt golf can be saved.

Let’s keep the rink

I do, however, want to keep the skating rink. It will be the perfect complement to the Science Center, because people like me can learn firsthand the laws of physics, especially gravity.

Delving into the mind of wrong-way drivers

That six-car pileup on Interstate 90 brings up a question: What possesses anyone to drive the wrong way on a freeway? Do they think everyone else on the freeway is, like, really confused? Or do they suffer under the delusion that they are in Britain?

Save the endangered filibuster

The new Congress launched its historic blitz of congressional reform by … refusing to outlaw the filibuster, a fine Senate tradition allowing one loudmouth blowhard to thwart the will of the majority.

Reality check No. 3

Which, of course, gives that blowhard the exact same powers as a federal appeals judge.
