Decision At UI Expected Today

The three finalists for Idaho’s football coaching job interviewed on Sunday and a decision on the new head coach was expected today.

The finalists were Washington assistant coaches Chris Tormey and Scott Linehan, and California assistant Tim Lappano. All three visited Moscow on Sunday.

Lappano met with UI athletic director Pete Liske and the search committee early Sunday afternoon. Tormey and Linehan interviewed in the late afternoon. UI administrators were said to be finalizing whom would be hired at press time.

A press conference today is likely.

The Vandals are replacing John L. Smith, who took the Utah State job last week.

Tormey, 39, has been at UW for 11 seasons, working as defensive coordinator last season. He attended Spokane’s Gonzaga Prep.

Lappano, 38, also a Gonzaga Prep grad uate, was a standout running back at Idaho from 1975-79.

Linehan, 31, a standout quarterback at UI in the 1980s, has been an assistant at UW, Idaho and Nevada-Las Vegas.
