Hawks, Erickson Near Deal Financial Negotiations Set To Begin With Miami Coach

John Clayton Tacoma News Tribune

Negotiations will begin today here to determine whether University of Miami coach Dennis Erickson will become the Seattle Seahawks’ fifth head coach.

Tom Condon, president of the football division of the International Management Group, is expected to fly to the area this morning to meet with Seahawks president David Behring. Erickson’s $700,000 contract is one of the highest in college football. He has seven guaranteed years remaining on a deal that also includes a $1 million annuity and incentive bonuses.

Money isn’t the main consideration during the negotiations. Erickson is seeking a commitment that the Seahawks are willing to give him the time and the resources to fulfill his dream of producing a Super Bowl team for his hometown.

The Seahawks have their search on hold during their negotiations with Erickson. He is rejecting pursuits of other NFL teams interested in him.

Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeff Lurie keeps calling Erickson to see if he wants the franchise’s $2 million-a-year position. The Denver Broncos want to interview him, but he isn’t responding.

During the Hurricanes’ preparation for the Orange Bowl, Erickson refused to return phone calls to the Carolina Panthers.

The price for Erickson might be above the $1 million salary of Tom Flores, who was fired as coach and general manager after the season. Erickson is believed to be seeking a five-year contract to do his job.
