Wisconsin Escapee Caught In Mexico

Associated Press

A martialarts expert who escaped from a Wisconsin jail last year while awaiting sentencing on a drug conviction has been captured in Mexico, the government said Sunday.

The federal attorney general’s office said John Benjamin Warda, described as one of America’s mostwanted fugitives, was arrested in the state of Colima, about 300 miles west of Mexico City.

Warda fled the Ozaukee County Jail in Port Washington, Wis., on Aug. 31. He was awaiting sentencing for involvement in a major cocaine ring. He faced 18 years in prison.

Authorities claimed Warda had ties to organized crime and accused him of threatening witnesses. Deputy U.S. Marshal Scott Albrecht said he also was suspected of paying $100,000 to have four people killed.
