Birth Comes 2 Years After Mother’s Death

Associated Press

A baby has been born two years after her biological mother’s death, a Rome gynecologist was quoted as saying Tuesday.

The baby was one of eight embryos conceived through in vitro fertilization six months before the woman died in a car accident in December 1992, the Italian news agency ANSA said.

Four embryos implanted in the woman had failed to result in pregnancy, and the other four were frozen for future attempts.

After the woman’s death, her husband asked Dr. Pasquale Bilotta to implant the embryos in his sister. The sister, married and the mother of a 6-year-old boy, gave birth to a girl a week ago.
