Boy Booked For Possession Of Stolen Bike, Burglar Tools

Spokane police stopped a 14-year-old boy riding a stolen bicycle Monday night and found him in possession of several tools common to burglars.

The boy was riding the bike along Monroe Street near Augusta when officers saw him, said Dick Cottam, police spokesman.

Officers recognized the bike as one reported stolen earlier in the evening, Cottam said. The boy tried to flee, but soon was caught.

He told officers that he found the bike in an alley, but that he fled because he was afraid it had been stolen.

The boy was booked into Juvenile Detention on charges of possessing stolen property and burglary tools.

Twelve-year-old robbed

A 12-year-old boy was waiting for the bus Jan. 4, when he was robbed by an older boy.

The boy told police he was waiting for the Spokane Transit bus at the stop in front of Garry Middle School, when he was attacked.

An older boy, about 13 or 14 years old, cornered the younger boy in the bus shelter after school and demanded money, Cottam said.

The robber also took the boy’s watch.

Road temporarily closed

Spokane County officials closed down Rutter Parkway Saturday night after heavy wet snow made the road impassible.

Drivers trying to get from Waikiki to Nine Mile Road had to detour around to Country Homes Boulevard and Francis Avenue. Rutter Parkway was reopened early Sunday morning.

“Every so often what will happen is if they have an accident they will sometime close that road until we can get a sander there,” said Phil Barto, county operations engineer. “It happens on a lot of the hills.”

On Saturday, county sheriff’s deputies noticed the road was impassable near St. George’s School. To keep the area from getting too congested, deputies blocked off the road for more than an hour until a sander could get up there.

“This is the time of the year when you have bare and wet roads with patches of ice in shady spots,” Barto said. “Everyone needs to be really careful because you don’t know what you’re going to run into.”
