‘Dumber’ Still Leads Box Office

“Dumb and Dumber” topped the flat and flatter weekend box office with about $9.2 million, according to estimates compiled by The Hollywood Reporter.

Typically, box office receipts for the first post-holiday weekend in January are flat, and this weekend was down approximately 7 percent to 8 percent from the comparable weekend last year, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“Disclosure” continued to show sturdy legs with an estimated $7.3 million for second place. The only film to open in wide release over the post-holiday weekend was Disney’s “Houseguest,” which debuted in third with an estimated $6 million.

“Little Women” dropped 25 percent to about $5.1 million for fourth place. “Nell” took in about $5 million for fifth place. “Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book” finished sixth with approximately $4.4 million.

“I.Q.” scored seventh with an estimated $3.8 million. “Richie Rich” starring Macaulay Culkin brought in about $3.6 million to finish in eighth place. “Street Fighter” had an estimated $2.9 million for ninth place. “The Santa Clause” rounded out the top 10 with an estimated $2.2 million.

Among the films on platform release, Paramount’s “Nobody’s Fool” took in $140,000 on eight screens. Since its Christmas Day limited opening, the Paul Newman film’s total take is approximately $550,000. TriStar’s “Legends of the Fall” brought in an estimated $225,000 in seven theaters.
