Late Free Throws Lift Lumberjacks

Northern Arizona University’s Brad Snyder hit two free throws with 2 seconds remaining Thursday night as the Lumberjacks pulled out a 68-67 Big Sky Conference-opening win over Montana in Flagstaff, Ariz.

The win snapped a four-game Northern Arizona (1-0, 4-8) losing streak. The Lumberjacks had not beaten the Grizzlies since the 1987-88 season.

NAU shot 78 percent from the free-throw line and was led by John Rondeno’s 18 points and six rebounds. Snyder contributed 13 points for the Lumberjacks and Makeul Williams added 12.

Shawn Samuelson and Jeremy Lake led Montana (0-1, 9-5) with 17 points each.

In Ogden, Utah, Ruben Nembhard scored 24 points to lead the Wildcats over the Bobcats in the Big Sky opener for both teams.

Jimmy DeGraffenried added 21 points and Kirk Smith scored 18 points and pulled down 17 rebounds for Weber (1-0, 8-5).

MSU (0-1, 12-2) was led by Kwesi Coleman with 21 points. Eric Talley and Adam Leachman had 12 each.

WCC Portland 81, San Francisco 79

In San Francisco, Canaan Chatman’s 25 points, including 16 in the second half, led the Pilots over the Dons.

Portland (1-0, 10-3) scored the game’s last eight points, all in the final 1:43. Kasey Flicker’s 3-point shot and Lemont Daniels’ 3-point play tied the game at 79, setting the stage for the winning basket by Daniels with 7 seconds left.

The Dons (0-2, 6-9) were led by Gerald Walker’s 19 points, but Walker’s two late turnovers enabled the Pilots to make their final comeback.

Daniels finished with 19 points and Curt Ranta added 13 for Portland, all in the second half.

The Pilots outrebounded San Francisco 45-31, getting 20 off the offensive boards. For San Francisco, Booker T. Washington scored 16 and Tyrone Paul had 14.
