Compiled From Wire Services

Powered by a hole-in-one on the 17th hole, Barb Mucha shot a 4-under-par 68 to take a one-shot lead after the first round of the Tournament of Champions, the year’s opening LPGA event.

Playing in her hometown, Orlando, Fla., Mucha played the Jack Nicklaus-designed Grand Cypress Resort course at 36-32, despite making bogey on No. 18 following her second LPGA career ace.

One stroke back was Beth Daniel, the 1994 LPGA Player of Year. Betsy King and Tammie Green were at 71.

Jim Furyk and Keith Fergus, playing in the first and last groups on a windy day, shot 5-under-par 67s Thursday to share a one-stroke lead after the opening round of the $1.2 million Hawaiian Open.

Trailing the co-leaders by a shot were Steve Jones, Mark Brooks, Tom Lehman, Clark Dennis, Yoshinori Mizumaki of Japan and Duffy Waldorf.

At 69 were two-time Hawaiian Open winner Corey Pavin (1986-87), Mike Sullivan, Jim McGovern, Dan Pohl, J.L. Lewis, Kelly Gibson and Dave Barr at 3-under 69.
