Schedule Garden Events Now

Duncan Gardens in Manito Park is one of Spokane’s more popular summer outdoor wedding sites. This summer, however, those planning to tie the knot amid the flowers at this formal garden better plan a June or July wedding - the garden will be closed for renovations in August.

The Spokane Parks and Recreation Department is renovating Duncan Gardens in two phases. In early spring, work begins with installation of urns, pedestals, benches and a reflection pool. The second phase, which will close the garden to weddings, concerts and public use, begins Aug. 13 and includes removal and replanting of existing flower beds and grass.

For information about scheduling weddings or other events at the garden, call the parks department at 625-6200.

The zen of tea: It’s not too early to mark your calendars for a couple of upcoming events at the Mukogawa Fort Write Institute.

The institute’s Japanese Cultural Center will hold a Tea Room open house from 1 to 3 p.m. April 24. There will be a lecture and demonstration of serving tea in traditional Japanese style at 1 and 2 p.m. in the library.

Those who want to participate in - rather than just watch - the tea ceremony can attend a workshop in tea ceremony etiquette from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on April 20. Reservations for the $5 workshop can be made weekdays at 328-2971.

Getting warm: The traditional wood-burning fireplace is no longer the only choice available when it comes to supplementing home heating systems and adding ambience to our living rooms. Home owners can choose from a variety of fireplace and stove options.

The Washington State Energy Office says pellet stoves are one of the most efficient stoves because they automatically meter the fuel and air supply for even burning. And the stoves produce no smoke, making them one of the least-polluting wood stoves available.

But, are they the right choice for your home?

The energy office is offering a free information packet on pellet stoves, which includes a comparison of stove types and information on inserts, emissions, efficiency, fuel delivery, installation, maintenance and pellet fuel.

The packet is available by calling the energy office in Spokane at 324-7980 or (800) 962-9731.
