Grizzlies Overcome Weber State, 92-87

Shawn Samuelson scored 22 points and pulled down 13 rebounds and Jeremy Lake added 18 points to rally Montana to a 92-87 Big Sky Conference victory over Weber State on Saturday night in Ogden, Utah.

Weber (1-1, 8-6) had led 45-41 at halftime and extended its advantage to 58-51 with 12:38 to play on Reuben Nembhardt’s tip-in.

But Montana (1-1, 10-5) closed to 67-65 with 8:07 left when the Wildcats’ Kirk Smith was called for his fifth personal foul and a technical. The Grizzlies’ Lake hit four straight free throws and then added the next two field goals for Montana - including a 3-pointer.

Weber was led by Lewis Lofton’s 19 points, including six 3-pointers.

In Flagstaff, Ariz., the Lumberjacks (2-0, 5-8) overcame a 19-point deficit in the second half and pulled away in overtime to defeat the Bobcats (0-2, 12-3).

The Lumberjacks received 16 secondhalf points from forward Tyrone Johnson. Johnson, with a career-high 21 points, sparked a late 9-2 run to send the game into an extra period.

Northern Arizona senior guard John Rondeno added 20 points to lead the Lumberjacks to their first sweep over Montana and Montana State since the 1985-86 season. Northern Arizona posted a 68-67 win over Montana on Thursday night.

In San Diego, Canaan Chatman scored 20 points and the Pilots (1-0, 11-3) used a stifling defense in beating the Toreros (2-1, 6-7) in a West Coast Conference game.

Portland used a 10-2 run midway through the second half to increase its lead to 58-46 with 7:33 remaining. The Pilots made 8 of 10 free throws along with a fastbreak dunk by Chatman in the spurt.
