Suspect Arrested In Gang Shootings

Bonnie Harris Staff Writer

The second suspect in last month’s Underhill Park gang shootings was arrested Wednesday in Kelso, Wash., Spokane police said.

Anthony D. Johnson, 25, was a passenger in a car when Kelso police saw him flip a lighted cigarette out a window. An officer stopped the car and discovered Johnson was wanted on four felony warrants for attempted murder in Spokane.

Johnson was known locally as Fred Jackson, one of two gang members sought in the shootings of four men in the East Central park Dec. 19. Police believe the shootings were related to gang and drug activities, spokesman Dick Cottam said.

Another suspect, Jerome Hurt, 21, was arrested last month in Los Angeles County after a high-speed car chase there. Hurt was known locally as Marquis Jones and also faces four counts of attempted murder.

Police believe the two suspects went with at least four other gang members to the park near Eighth and Fiske shortly before 1 a.m. After the shootings, all four victims gave different stories about why they had gone to the park.

Johnson will be returned to Spokane within the next few days, police said. Hurt faces other charges in Los Angeles.
