Oregon Women Overpower WSU

From Staff And Wire Reports

Women’s basketball

Renae Fegent’s game-high 22 points led the University of Oregon to an 84-66 Pac-10 women’s basketball victory Thursday over Washington State in Eugene, Ore.

All five starters for the Ducks (3-1 Pac-10, 10-3) scored in double figures. Arianne Boyer scored 19 and Cindie Edamura added 15 to lead UO.

WSU (2-3, 9-5) was paced by Susie Jarosch’s 17 points, while Jenni Ruff scored 14. The Cougars also received 10 points each from Kireen Ellis and Julie Wight.

“I thought we weren’t ready to play,” Cougars coach Harold Rhodes said. “We were playing a team with a lot of confidence, with a lot of pride and a lot of fire. I thought we would be the team that would come out with fire after beating UCLA and USC.

“Oregon did a great job of executing and taking advantage of when we were out of position,” Rhodes added. “We got outhustled to loose balls and we didn’t rotate in our press when we had traps.”

The Cougars, after hitting half of their 28 first half shots, turned cold in the final 20 minutes, shooting 36 percent in the second half and 42 percent for the game.

The first half was a series of runs by each team, with the Ducks building a 12-point advantage, losing most of it and then going back on top by eight at halftime, 40-32.

“We have to recognize not everyone will have a great game on any given night,” Rhodes said. “Tonight we didn’t have anyone step up.”

The Cougars conclude their swing into Oregon on Saturday with a 7 p.m. game at Oregon State.
