CV Answers Call In 59-40 Rout Of U-Hi

By The Spokesman-Review

Whenever they were needed, Central Valley got contributions from different sources during a 59-40 boys basketball win over University.

The win and Stinky Sneaker spirit award gave the Bears a sweep of the night’s competition.

In the opener, Central Valley’s girls gained a split of their season series by handing the Titans their fourth straight loss, 44-43.

In front of a packed house - CV’s fans in school colors, U-Hi’s dressed in camouflage - there was no place for the Titans boys to hide.

Central Valley shot 62 percent from the field.

Geoff Courchaine was at times unstoppable, scoring five of his 10 first half-points as the Bears broke out to a 29-16 second-quarter lead.

Point guard Jeremy Nesbitt dished off nine assists and helped CV control the game.

Corby Schuh made four 3s and had 14 points.

Ben Platt dominated the boards in the third quarter to hold off University after a flurry of 3s closed the host team within six points.

And Courchaine finished off the Titans with three more fourth-quarter baskets, giving him 16 points for the night on 7-for-8 shooting.

Kelly Hineman wound up U-Hi’s scoring leader with 13 points, 11 in the second half.

Central Valley (6-3, 8-5) is tied for second in the Greater Spokane League. University dropped to 3-6 and 5-8 for the year.

Central Valley sophomore Katie Carpenter sank only one free throw in two trips to the line in the game’s final moments. Teammate Carrie Sanders made sure it was the game winner.

Sanders rebounded both Carpenter misses with 29 and 9 seconds left to preserve CV’s victory in the opener of a doubleheader between CV and University.

“I knew we were in a tight situation and knew I was going to rebound no matter what and fight to the end,” Sanders said.

The Central Valley and University girls basketball teams put the spirit into the annual Stinky Sneaker game.

The game featured 16 ties or lead changes. Carpenter paced scoring with 14 points.

The victory was the third straight for the young Bears, now tied for fourth with their rival.

“The difference between this game and the last one,” said coach Dale Poffenroth, “… there was no difference. We had to foul the first time and Sally (Jamison) made her free throws. This time they fouled us and we made ours.”

CV trailed 18-10 midway through the second quarter, but caught up on a pair of Crystal Lee baskets. The Bears blew a five-point thirdquarter lead and trailed 37-32 on a pair of Stephani Shelton baskets.

Sanders led another CV rally, finishing with 10 points, and preserved the win with her tenacious ball hawking at the end.
