Pilots Strafe Broncos, Move Into First Place

Curt Ranta scored a career-high 26 points, 15 in the second half, as Portland thumped Santa Clara 72-49 Saturday night and knocked the Broncos out of first place in the West Coast Conference.

Canaan Chatman added 17 points, 12 in the second half, helping the Pilots (13-3) win their seventh straight game overall. Portland assumed the league lead by notching its fourth WCC win without a loss.

Marlon Garnett led Santa Clara (1-4, 12-4) with 11 points. Highscoring Steve Nash, who had a career-high 40 against Gonzaga on Thursday, was held to nine points, two in the first half.

Ranta, a 6-foot-10 senior, was virtually unstoppable inside. His six points in an 8-2 run opened the second half, allowing Portland to jump ahead 39-20. Santa Clara, which had won six of its last seven games, never came closer than 11 points after that.

At Malibu, Calif., Gerald Brown scored 15 points to lead a balanced attack as the Waves (2-2, 6-10) overpowered the Dons (2-3, 8-10).

Gavin Vanderputten had 14 points and eight rebounds and R.J. Powell also scored 14 for Pepperdine, which outrebounded USF 42-24.

Shabaka Lands scored 17 points for ISU, including three 3-pointers. Jimmy DeGraffenried was the leading scorer for Weber State with 18.

Shawn Samuelson scored 22 points and Shane Belnap hit 5 of 6 free throws down the stretch as the Grizzlies (2-1, 11-5) edged the Bobcats (0-3, 13-4) at Missoula.

The Grizzlies pulled ahead 78-76 with 42 seconds remaining in the game when MSU’s Quadre Lollis fouled Matt Kempfert on a made basket and Kempfert made the free throw.

The Bobcats were forced to foul and Belnap made four consecutive free throws to assure victory.
