4 Suspected Militants Slain By Police

Compiled From Wire Services

Police killed four suspected Muslim radicals Sunday, including two described by security sources as leaders in Egypt’s main extremist group. Militants killed a policeman in an ambush in southern Egypt.

Police shot to death Mahmoud Sayed Selim and Khaled Bekhit Sitouhy during an attempted arrest on a bridge in Sohag, 240 miles south of Cairo, the security sources said. They spoke on condition of anonymity.

Both men led armed cells of al-Gamaa al-Islamiya, or the Islamic Group, the sources said. The militant movement has claimed responsibility for attacks on police and government officials.

Police also killed two men during a raid on an apartment used by militants in the town of el-Wasta, 60 miles south of Cairo.
