Chiefs Complete Sweep Of East, Win Eighth Straight

The Spokane Chiefs finally conquered the East.

The Chiefs won their fifth straight on the road and eighth in a row overall, knocking off Lethbridge 5-2 in a Western Hockey League game Sunday.

The victory marked the first time the Chiefs have managed a sweep of Eastern Division opponents on the road. It also positioned Spokane within four points of fourth-place Tri-City, which plays host to the Chiefs on Wednesday.

Against the Hurricanes, Bryan McCabe scored two goals, the first on a slap shot from the right circle at 2:18 to open the game’s scoring. It came off a feed from Jeremy Stasiuk.

After Lethbridge tied it at 1, Stasiuk answered at 18:58 with a shot from the left circle off the stick of Lethbridge goaltender Darren Smadis, a former Chief.

The Chiefs increased the lead to 3-1 in the second period when former Hurricane Jay Bertsch rebounded a John Cirjak miss at 9:01.

Lethbridge’s Lee Hamilton scored his first WHL goal 2 minutes later before Spokane finally put it away.

Joe Cardarelli scored unassisted late in the second period and McCabe added an emptynet goal late in the third to seal the win.
